What would The Chinese High School be like, say, ten years later? Would it be in a state of trepidation or just every thing sugar and spice and all things nice? In the present, our school is implementing TDP (Talent Development Programme), GEP (Gifted Education Programme) and a new consortium system (Quality Education for Special Talents. QUEST). Would the school still stick to these systems or get rid of them completely and introduce newer, more effective way of learning.
For TDP and GEP, the students are currently involved in extra work that is out of the syllabus in the field that they are interested in. This includes going on field trips, organizing seminars and working on major project work such as ThinkQuest. As for the consortium, the students are now able to attend lectures though they have not reached the pre-University or University level of education. This is to provide them with an opportunity to experience what the system is like and be used to it so that they will not encounter too much difficulty when they grow up. The students in this consortium are also making use of laptop computers during the lessons.
So, what actually would the future be like for The Chinese High School? Would it leave aside all the TDP and GEP and go back to the original system of teaching whereby teachers give tutorials and students are just given another chance to practice their shorthand. Or would it introduce another even more daring programme? Perhaps next time the students will be the ones conducting the lessons and teachers will only have to play the role of guiding them along, passing them the skills of research, presentation in front of a large audience and the like. Or since information technology is so advanced, maybe the occupation of teaching will just disappear from Singapore and students who belong to The Chinese High School will access information provided by the school and do their self-study, after which there will be question and answer session in the chatrooms where doubts will be clarified by the person-in-charge. Imagine no teachers, what would the world be like? Unimaginable...
Maybe the Chinese High school will allow the consortium programmes (lectures, laptop teaching) to be reached out to the whole school population and other students would also enjoy the privilege of taking part in these programmes. The whole Chinese High School system might even change to whole lecture system whereby there are no more tutorials and students would be coming to school at different times of the day to attend lectures, in outside clothes Laptops would then be a must for all the students to own. But that also comes with a lot of problemsif you can think of that... so after all, will all these be a blessing or a curse?
